Thieves can punch the lock into the handle, allowing them to move the rods and open the door. The pencil on the left is pointing at the vulnerable area.
Another method is to pry along the bottom edge of the handle to get at the rods. Each of these methods are common.

This photo shows a Jimmi' Jammer™ plate installed inside an 02 Explorer door.
Notice the plate guards the area around the lock cyclinder which is the problem area on these vehicles.
The Jimmi' Jammer™ plate prevents the lock from being smashed into the door, and shields the lock rods from attack from either below the handle or from the side.
